Adding a new supplier? Check their GST registration details before updating your vendor records.

The GST portal’s “Search Taxpayer” facility lets you look up a GSTIN without logging in. Review the legal name, trade name, registration status, registration date and principal place of business. Where applicable, check the cancellation date and available return-filing details.

Compare these particulars with the supplier’s invoice and onboarding documents. If the name differs or the registration shows suspended or cancelled, seek clarification and review the relevant dates before deciding the tax treatment.

Keep a dated record of your check and resolve discrepancies with supporting documents. Registration verification is a useful first step; invoice reconciliation and input-tax-credit eligibility still require separate review.
