Paid income tax under the wrong payment head? Check the challan-correction facility promptly.

For eligible PAN-based challans, the e-Filing portal allows requests to correct the major head or minor head within 30 days of the challan deposit date. This online facility covers eligible paid, unconsumed challans under minor heads 100 (advance tax), 300 (self-assessment tax) and 400 (regular assessment tax).

Log in and open Services → Challan Correction. Compare the payment receipt with the intended tax payment, select the correction, review the details and complete e-verification.

Only one online correction request is allowed per challan, so check carefully before submitting. Further corrections require approaching the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer. Retain the acknowledgement and track the request status.
